ESSEX BOOK FESTIVAL ? Speed Dating for Writers offers ?top tips from the Book World? in an unusual speed-dating format.
The event takes place this Friday from 6.30pm at Rayleigh Library, 132/4 High Street, Rayleigh, SS6 7BX.

Calling all aspiring writers! Have you got a story to tell? Are you fascinated by a topic and want to share your knowledge? Are you just itching to write but not sure how to start?
If you have ever read a book and thought I could have written that or if you want to discover more about the book trade and how to go about finding a publisher or an agent, then Speed Dating For Writers is just what you need. Whether you have some writing experience and want to take the next step or have never written but want to begin, come along to a unique event bringing together new and potential writers with established authors and people from different areas of publishing and book selling.
Representatives from across the book world including local authors, journalists, publishers, creative writing tutors and book sellers will share their experience and their advice in a fast and fun evening of speed dating. Get top tips, learn a few trade secrets and meet other local writers. You won?t meet Mr or Ms Right but you might get the ideas you need to begin to write.
In true speed dating style, participants will have 4 minutes to get the essential information about writing and publishing from their ?dates?. Bring a notebook and a pen and be ready with questions, queries, ideas, problems, concerns, but make them short, sharp and to the point. No previous experience of writing or publishing is necessary, just a desire to write.
All speed daters will be invited back to a follow-up event in 6 months time to see if the ideas and suggestions and advice they receive has helped develop or begin their writing.
Details of a special, free to enter Essex Book Festival Short Story Writing Competition will also be announced at this event.
Tickets for Speed Dating for Writers cost just ?5 and include a glass of wine. Tickets are on sale from Rayleigh Library or by post. Sarah Banham
Sarah Banham is an independently published novelist who designs and delivers creative writing workshops. She also produces and presents a weekly radio show called Writer?s Block on Saint FM 94.7
She has written and published 6 books in 5 years and has work included in a further 6 published anthologies.? She currently has 3 works in progress including a ?How to? guide?for aspiring authors, intended to aid new writers with their own novel, incorporates tips and lots of first hand advice with an easy-to-read humorous tone.
Karen Bowman
Karen is a member of the Society of Women Writers & Journalists and has been professionally published for twelve years. Her recent first book Essex Girls grew out of one of the many articles she wrote for Essex Life & Countryside Magazine and Essex Boys (Amberley Publishing) is to follow early in 2013. She has been contracted to write her third book for Pen & Sword Books, publishing date 2014.
It is a recent and relatively quick introduction into the realm of book writing but it is an ambition Karen has nursed since childhood.? Able only in the last few years to fully devote her time to her ?passion? her background in libraries, research and education indulged her love of books whilst still a busy wife and mother. A newcomer to public speaking, she has found her interest in period costume lends itself well to the costumed talks she gives to schools and societies. Her hobbies include Archery, Archaeology and a fledgling interest in photography.
Malcolm Burgess
Malcolm Burgess and Heather Reyes run Oxygen Books, publishers of the city-pick series, featuring some of the best writing on favourite world cities. These include New York, Berlin and Paris with St Petersburg appearing this autumn. Andrew Burton
Andrew runs Lakeside Theatre Writers, a group which meets monthly at Essex University?s Lakeside Theatre.? He is also responsible for ?Get it Writ?, a new short story competition and writer development programme linked to the 2013 Essex Book Festival.
Andrew has taught on University Campus Suffolk?s professional writing module and delivers ?Getting to where you want to be? writing workshops in partnership with NAWE (National Association of Writers in Education).? Former Creative Programme Manager at Writers? Centre Norwich, Andrew helped write the winning bid document for Norwich to become England?s first UNESCO City of Literature.

Daryl Easlea
Daryl Easlea began writing professionally in 1999 after a long career in music retail and then, belatedly, university. After graduating in 2000, he became the deputy editor at Record Collector, where he remains a regular contributor.
His work appears regularly in Mojo. He has compiled and annotated over 300 CDs (his favourite being 50,000 Fall Fans Can?t Be Wrong: 39 Fall Greats), DJs, comperes, broadcasts and was born to dance. His book, Everybody Dance: Chic & The Politics Of Disco was published by Helter Skelter in December 2004 and was voted NME?s third best book of 2005. His second, The Story Of The Supremes accompanied the Supremes exhibition at the V & A in May 2008. Paul Giles
Paul Giles is a journalist, published poet and lecturer in creative writing. He has gained a BA Honours degree in Creative Writing from London Metropolitan University.
Paul has been working for the past two years as a lecturer at South Essex College teaching a variety of writing courses and teaches independent writing workshops.
He has worked as a journalist in Essex for the past seven years working on several titles across the county.
The 31-year-old has an extensive knowledge of the craft of writing and is currently working on a series of short stories and a collection of poetry.
He was born in Basildon, lived in the hinterlands of Pitsea for the majority of his youth and now resides further up the estuary in Southend.
Sion Hamilton
Si?n started work at Foyles in 2001.? Since then he has roamed the length and breadth of the shop, but with most of his time spent as Head of Fiction, Literature and Poetry.? He was made General Manager of the whole shop in 2009.
Si?n has contributed to various panels and periodicals over the years and was a judge for the Costa Prize for Poetry in 2007.? She lives in sunny Sydenham with his family, books, lots of tea and quite a bit of music.? He is very excited about David Byrne?s new book How Music Works.
Zoe Howe
Zo? Howe is a music writer whose books include the acclaimed Wilko Johnson ? Looking Back At Me; Typical Girls? The Story Of The Slits; ?How?s Your Dad?? Living In The Shadow Of A Rock Star Parent and Florence + The Machine ? An Almighty Sound. Bernardine Kennedy
Bernardine Kennedy is the author of nine novels. Her books are about family relationships and are gritty and occasionally violent with no punches pulled, however there is often a lighthearted element, a touch of glitz and a satisfactory ending.
Bernardine was born in London but spent most of her childhood with her travelling ex-pat parents in Singapore and Nigeria before settling in Essex, where she still lives.
Her diverse and very varied working life, which has given her such an insight into the situations of her characters, has included careers as an Air Hostess, a Swimming Instructor and a Social Worker as well a Teacher of English in a women?s prison.
She has been a freelance writer for many years initially writing whatever was wanted by whoever before eventually specialising in travel features for popular magazines and newspapers. This gave her the opportunity to combine her two favourite activities; writing and travelling!
Bernardine also writes as Marie Maxwell. RUBY, a regional saga set in the Southend area and Bernardine?s first novel under that name, was published this year and GRACIE, the second in the series of four, will be published next April.
Hannah Marsh
Currently covering arts and leisure at the Southend Echo, Hannah Marsh is a journalist and feature writer who?s had her work published in local, national and industry newspapers and magazines.
With a passion for the arts, food, vintage and travel, she started off with a hard-headed training as a news hack in Sussex before moving to Southend to work for the Echo where she covers all things music, art, theatre and entertainment in the area.
When she?s not balancing gallery openings and first nights with gigs and long days in the office, she pens a food blog which has picked up readers all over the world, and writes for various travel and conservation magazines ? and of course makes time to hang out with her precious pooch Lola as well as hosting her own vintage jazz nights Jam Jar Jazz and singing at other clubs in the area.
Tom Seabrook
Tom Seabrook is a writer and editor based in Leigh-on-Sea. He is the author of Bowie In Berlin: A New Career In A New Town and has edited and contributed to dozens of other books about music and popular culture. Liz Trenow
Liz Trenow?s family have been silk weavers for nearly three hundred years, and she grew up next to the family mill in Sudbury, which provided the inspiration for her debut novel. The mill is the oldest family-owned silk company in Britain and is one of very few still operating today. Liz worked in the mill whilst a student, going on to become a journalist and spent fifteen years working on newspapers, BBC radio and television news. She lives in Colchester.
Nancy Wallace
Nancy Wallace began her career selling printed music on Denmark Street, before moving across Charing Cross Road to become a floor manage and music specialist at the original flagship Foyles bookshop.
After several years playing an integral role in bringing Foyles into the 21st century, the other side of the industry beckoned and she made a move into publishing.
Her current role as Production Editor for renowned independent publisher Kogan Page sees her dealing with all the financial and practical aspects of getting a book ?made?.? Nancy is also a respected singer, songwriter and recording artist
