The office of Gov. Jerry Brown announced Wednesday that California's chief executive is being treated for prostate cancer.
Dr. Eric Small, Brown?s oncologist at UC San Francisco, said in a statement that the governor is undergoing a short course of "conventional radiotherapy."
"Fortunately, this is early stage localized prostate cancer," Small said. "The prognosis is excellent, and there are not expected to be any significant side effects.?
Brown's office said the 74-year-old governor is continuing a full work schedule during the treatment, which is expected to be completed the week of Jan. 7, 2013.
The news comes after revelations last year that Brown had a cancerous growth removed from the right side of his nose. The basal cell carcinoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer and can be caused by sun exposure.
