Pianist Paul Lewis talks about playing Schubert's last three sonatas ...

On Oct. 22, British pianist Paul Lewis will perform a rare feat, Franz Schubert's final three sonatas. He performs on the Portland Piano International series. Over the weekend, the New York Times ran a story about Lewis playing these profound and sprawling works. It's a good read, but this paragraph stood out for me. I'd never thought of the three sonatas quite this way:

?The turbulence of the C minor sonata, through the nostalgia of the A major sonata, to the final sense of acceptance in the B flat sonata, take us on one of the most moving and rewarding musical journeys of the 19th century,? he said. ?There is something that represents the past, present and future about these three works, which have a kind of emotional logic to them.?

Lewis performs at the Gerding Theater at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22. Gerding Theater.
